I can remember viewing a piece of video in the Forum on the subject of head on collisions - but I can't find it for the life of me. It showed a Volvo 740 estate coming off a poor second in an offset head on collision with a more modern Renault.

The point of the digression is that the current (September) edition of Mercedes Enthusiast carries an informative article on MB "Safety Firsts", including consideration of offset frontal collisions since the W126 of 1979.

Not that I would recommend you try it, but if it ever happens to you, you will fare better than most.

depends how rusty the 126 is, some MB's look good on the outside but the stuff we dont see can be rotten.

The Renault Modus in that clip was very impressive indeed - but then it had just been awarded 5 NCAP Stars and should have fared well

Ah, did you see how the 4* Q7 fared against in the 5* Fiat 500 on the "other forum*. Size it would seem, still does matter.

I know I am safe in my E class, its one of the reasons I went for it. Has all the clever bits, but still 2 tons of (galvanised) metal to keep me safe.

Not related to the crash discussion however this has a nice paint job IMO and sounds very nice indeed :)
This and this also look like fun:twisted:

So bigger is still better then. It's just that new bigger is better than old bigger.

Size matters more than ever? :D

Also what they are trying to illustrate with that test is not just the difference in weight, but also the heights. The crash structures on both are designed to NCAP 5, but the Audi goes over the to of the Fiats, so Fiat's doesn't have a chance to work.

Size has always mattered, the clip here is not for the young or the nervous, but if you can watch it through, it will go into slow motion after a couple of minutes, try and see the 2 cars overtaking the red truck.....beware its shocking, just shows how insignificant a car is when trucks are involved.
Hope its ok to provide a youtube link....

Dont think anyone walked away from that accident. Just goes to show how much energy there is in a truck and the damage it can do.
