If you disconnect the battery there should be no risk of the air-bag deploying.
To remove the wheel you undo the srews from the rear of the wheel and then remove the centre section of the wheel, followed by unbolting the wheel from the column.
Looking underneath the car you will be able to see the rack and pinion. Where the pinion clamps the column there is a moulded pip in the alloy rack casting. The split in the clamp should align with the pip when the steering is set straight.
Thnx dieselman i finally managed to solve the problem, first disconected the battery then took off the centre of the steering wheel by undoing two bolts at the back of the streering wheel with a small alankey. there were two wires conected to the center of the wheel which i disconnected allowing me to access the main bolt. i then loosened the main bolt that held the steering to the column and lifted the steering wheel and repositioned it. had to do it a couple times before it was alligned with my wheels. then all i had to do was reconnect the two wires to the centere of the wheel and pop the bolts back in and the battery.
