Afternoon all.

First fault on the old girl and I wonder if the sharp frost last night is responsible.

Unlocked the car, opened the door and the driver's side windows struggled to drop their usual quarter on an inch. No matter, press on as I had to visit the dentist.

I have mine set to auto-lock the doors, but when this was attempted upon driving off the nearside door button pops up and down really quickly for about 2 seconds. Then it stays up.

After a 15 minute drive the driver's door windows still hadn't closed properly even though the frost was gone. I lowered the quarter window, raised it up and did the same with the driver's door window, and all ok. Shut the door and they both close where they should.

Pressed lock on the remote, but the nearside door button still chatters for a couple of seconds, button stays up. Pulled on the outside door handle and fortunately door appears to be locked.

Came back, drove around in the sun first and reached home. Door windows ok, locked car via remote but nearside door lock button still chatters for a couple of seconds, button stays up. Again, tried to open the door from outside and unable to, implying that it has locked.

Can any of guys offer possible reasons, please? Disappointed about this as up to now it's been 100% reliable. At least it locks I suppose.

Many thanks.

A spring breaks in the locking motor and makes the button bounce, a common 203/208 problem

Only a wild guess here, but what about the nearside lock being frozen inside the door? The electrical actuator struggles to work on auto lock and gives up, but the door's still locked in the mechanism? On the sensors on the auto-drop windows somehow?
I'll watch this post carefully as I told you I have exactly the same car. Mine's more of a 'young thing' though, I wouldn't call it an 'old girl' - it might play up!

yes its all to do with electric locking as apposed to vacuum that was used on other cars

Do a search here "bouncing button"

Many threads on it where the spring breaks

When I was in college in the '60's, other lads and me used to go into the local Woolies, up to the haberdashery counter. There one of us would say "Do you sell buttons?". When the assistant replied "Yes Love", we'd say "Can we have some Belly Buttons then?". And we'd run away giggling to each other. Not bad for 18 year old professional engineers of the future? How times have changed!!

When I worked in a Vauxhall garage, we would send the apprentices next door to ATS and tell them to ask for a "long weight".

We wouldn't see them for the rest of the morning! ;)

And there are many others, as I'm sure a few on this forum will testify.

I used to like to fill the chuck on a pillar or bench drill with oil :D:D
