I have an A Class mercedes for my wife and there is an intermitant starting issue.
When the fault occurs the symptoms are: turn the key and there is nothing, battery is fine there is no noise i.e. solonoid click etc
Then it will right itself later on and will be fine for a day.
I have been told it is the starter motor and that the engine needs to be removed???Cost 1000.
Suerly this can not be right does anyone have any info on a sililar problem, or can confirm the starter change requires a engine removal.

Any news will be good news

Merry Christmas

Hello

I'm sure someone will be around soon, I do remember seeing a picture of an a-class having some 'work' and basically the chassis looked to be removed from the car...

I don't believe it would cost £1000 though even if its a pig of a job though?

Starter motors are very common but removing engine is a bit OTT. The back of the engine needs to be dropped to get to it. MB time is 4 hours. It can be done in 2 but you will still be charged 4. Find a good indie, where are you?? do a search at the top of this page. Before jumping the gun, test the 3-4mm purple wire which is near the battery & dissapears out the floor facing backwards. This is the feed to the starter motor. If this is live when cranking, starter motor needed. If it's not, then it's probably just a relay next to the battery.

Good Stuff

Thank you young man i will try this as soon as i get the car back.
The chap in the garage reckons the fault has not returned and that he can not read the code unless the fault is live.
I thought that the computer always logged faults past and present?? He may be spinning me a yarn i think

Starter motor doesn't log any fault code. Maybe Santa's elves have fixed it:D
