The rear tyres on the R172 SLK are getting a little low and as autumn / winter is approaching I thought I'd best change them. The back end is quite lively in moist conditions when pulling out of 90 degree junctions and I usually have corrected it before ESP decides to help out. I keep forgetting the torque figure is not far off my old SL500..... So. I'm looking for a tyre thats above average in the wet. So far I've thought about Goodyear Eagle F1's (I used them on the SL500) but I've also heard good things about the Uniroyal Rainsport 5's. Has anyone used both and can give an opinion how they perform against each other? They look pretty similar on the specs. The tyre size is 245/35/18 and there is not much to choose from on the price - The Uniroyals come out around £114 each fitted and the Goodyears around £124 each fitted. They are both supposedly XL tyres (extra life) but we'll soon see about that..

I have Goodyear Efficient Grip on the rear of mine (for the summer) and really like them. Great in the wet and really good and predictable handling.

Given the difference is only £10 I'd probably go with the Goodyear.
Not tried the RS5 but comparing Goodyear Assymetric 2 and Uniroyal RS3 the RS is better in the wet by some margin but wear is a lot faster.
XL tyres are extra load (stiffer sidewalls) not extra life.

I have used both, and currently have RS5 on the front and the GY on the rear of my W204.

My Mother has GY all round on her W204 and they are great, very quiet and feel stable BUT they are not as good in the wet as the RS5, the car just doesn't feel as planted, the advantage of the GY is it is quieter.

For £10 extra a tyre I would get the GY as overall it is a better tyre, if the difference was £20 then the RS5 would be my choice.

What amazed me most was the difference in shape, the GY has much more rounded sides and massive rim protection whereas the RS5 is squarer with decent rim protection.

I would get 10k out of the RS5 on the rear so time will tell if the GY last longer bearing in mind my car puts 700 torques down and I do use them :)

They are both supposedly XL tyres (extra life).

XL means Extra Load

It was 1.15am when I started the thread and I had just been reading a review on Michelin Pilot 4 having extra life. It might also have been the 12 yr old Glenfiddich as well....hic!

Just a side tip. Look at Asda tyres. I havent seen anyone beat them in price on many tyres.
They must be sqeezing the hell out of tyre manufacturers.

Hmmm never found Asda that cheap...

The best range and prices, I think, are with Camskill Tyres up in Whitehaven. If you factor in fitting at £15 per wheel (for those of us who don't live in Whitehaven...), then I'm pretty sure they still top everyone... https://www.camskill.co.uk

Based on what the previous owner left me, I have Bridgestone Turanzas on the front and Conti-Sport 3s on the back. However, when I'm shelling out my own dollar, I NEVER buy one of the "Big 6" with their stupid prices. I'm not committed to any particular brand so I would see which one has the best deals from Nexen, Fulda, Falken, Kumho...

A lot of the guys on the Vauxhall Insignia forum I've recently come from swore by Landsail tyres - some of them were running GSis and they claim to have racked up big mileages without any issues...

Don't hang around if you need new tyres. The prices are going up rapidly.

I just put a pair of Goodyear AS 5's on my E63. They are far better than the part worn P Zero's but I'm waiting for some wet weather to see how much more grip there is.
Asda were a little more expensive than Camskill, but couldn't supply the size I wanted. You do have to factor in the cost of having them fitted elsewhere with Camskill. That cost in my area has also increased to £20 a tyre!

Costco. ;)

Nitrogen filled, new valve, fitting £ 8.40 per tyre.
£30 discount off 2 tyres. (purchase price )

Asda price - less.

'Super' unleaded 10/p L cheaper than Shell.

Those damn yanks ?

Get some chlorinated chicken while you are there

Hmmm... Costco don't do a 265/35/18. I know that's a stupid tyre size but I'm still a bit surprised...

Asda are competitive but there are others.. So far on the

245/35R18 GOODYEAR EAGLE F1 ASYMMETRIC 5 92Y XL

Asda £131.99 Fitted

Speedys Wheels and Tyres (10 branches mainly midlands but 1 in Middlesborough and 1 in Bradford) £124.00 fully fitted

It's getting silly now ! One online tyre outlet uses National Tyres and Autocare to fit so I thought I would have a laugh and see how much they are and surprise surprise they are £118.53 each fully fitted!! (cheaper than the online tyre seller directing me there!!) The site using National Tyres for fitting was https://www.tyre-shopper.co.uk/ and they came in at £122.77 each fitted which was still pretty keen...

Costco are £118.39 fitted but the nearest is a 40 mile round trip which negates the 28p saving.....

I'm still looking for that super deal but I think National Tyres will be hard to beat and I didn't think I would be saying that!
