Guy, I'm drowning in numbers here trying to discover the correct oil for my 1997 Sprinter 310D (WDB9034622P753439) manual gearbox. Russek says all gearboxes up to 051 110 111 use SAE 80, thereafter SAE 75W85. However, though my gearbox is liberally sprinkled with numbers, none of them match Russek's format.

The numbers I have are:

On the plate:
G28-5 werk gaggenhau
711-612 Aggr.nr
293-213 Fertl.nr
100-126 Var nr/NA

Stamped on the casing:
902 261 0601
P651/2
+GF+HG

Any help with that lot much appreciated!

Cheers, Jim

Thanks for your help Guy, sadly I live in the middle of nowhere overseas, and have to make do with whatever the local medieval hardware shop offers! Basically, am I going to be all right with any ??W80 as long as it ends in '80'? The chap carries a 75W85, so I was hoping you'd be able to confirm whether I had the later box or not, all those numbers mean very little to me.

Cheers again,

Jim

gearbox oil and rear diff oil for a 1997 sprinter 308D sprinter tipper/flatbed.
is the gearbox fill hole easy to locate? There is obviously a leak somewhere too, but i cant see myself taking the gearbox out to fit a new gasket. I have just bought it so i will clean it up and try and find the source.
Is there a dipstick arrangement for the fill or is it to the brim. I am in france so I will have to use local suppliers and brands. the oil has probably never been changed as it was maintained by the local building company guys who owned it before. Every nut I have tried to undo so far has been tightened to the max which isn't ideal. the sump plug has been impossible to shift, and the oil changed with a pump being the only solution.

Thanks Guy. I will check to see when the oil was last changed on my car, and if I need to get it done, I will order the Fuchs from your website.

Hi again Guy,

Just one query. The specification for the Fuchs Titan 3000 multi-purpose only says Mercedes 236.1 and 236.2, not 236.6. So will it be ok, or should I go for the Fuchs Titan 5005 which is said to be Mercedes approved?

Thanks

Oilman, sorry for the delay in getting back to you and saying thanks. How many litres of ATF for the manual gearbox, and how many for the rear diff 90? thats for the 308D sprinter 1997.
Thanks in advance this time. David

Hi David

I've had a look at the data I have and it says 1.6 litres for the gearbox and 1.8L for the diff.

Cheers

Well, maybe a state-of-the-art check then .... :)

1995 S124 E200 Auto, 224,000mls, maintenance/servicing always well attended-to, so sound, solid and smooth.

Age/milage no longer relevant; all about maintained condition, and condition is A1.

I am nevertheless wondering if newer oil technologies have anything to offer to an engine of this milage, which seems set to be one of those that just shrugs its shoulders and keeps-on keeping on and covers the same again.

So, just keep on with 10/40 semi-synth? If so, is one superior to the others for protection as well as lube as long as meeting MB spec?

Or pamper with something else/advanced/beneficial from current formulations?

Hadn't occurred to me to switch, seem to have been doing the right thing up to now ... however if a todays-lubricant offers something to continued good-running, she deserves the benefit!

Thanks for any observations/recommendations if relevant.

Many thanks

Hi

You could go for a 5w-40 synthetic to improve the cold start protection, but at 226k, I don't know if there is any real benefit. I'd probably stick with a decent semi-synthetic 10w-40, something like the Fuchs XTR, Motul 6100 or Millers XSS would be ideal.
