B6 due in 46 days my W212 E350cdi told me yesterday.

Shocked at Mercedes quoting £950 immediately sent me into pensioner money saving expert mode.

Do folk generally find it cheaper to source your own oil?

Seems a good deal at 10 litres for £56 though I think my car only needs 8 litres.

Anything 229.51 or 229.52 . I use anything that meets the spec . I’ve used a lot of that MB branded oil over the last few years .
I think you are 8.5L ?

How old is you car? If more than 3 years (thus no warranty loss worries) I'd look for a recommended indie within reach, I know there are a couple near the bottom of the M3 just north of Southampton but that might be a bit far from Arundel, maybe there's someone closer to you.

I don’t look at price but I’m very fussy as are my cars so I always supply the oils and filters. It’s like tyres, you may have several with the same speed rating but they all will have different characteristics!

I don’t even find Indy’s better on price at times but, I’d stick with an Indy or a good mechanic.

I do my own oil changes at 6k miles - dead easy.

No need to go under car to remove covers and sump plug - just use a suction device to sook the (hot) engine oil out through the dipstick tube.

I already had something like this from my boating days - you can't usually get underneath a boat engine to drain the oil, so this is how it has to be done.

In my experience, the oil filter is usually fairly accessible near the top of the engine rather than tucked away in an inaccessible position - check your particular model.

The trickiest bit is trying to pour the new oil back into the engine through that little dipstick tube! ;)

but going to Costco costs you another £300 for stuff that you didn't go in for in the first place :D
Very true. I went in looking for 20ltr drums of Castrol and they had none but the 4ltr were on offer and cheaper than 20ltr.

Halfords often have sales/discounts on oil, but buy a Mercedes Filter from Mercedes.

Mine uses 7.5 litres which is cheapest to buy 10, rather than 4 different size cans.

I buy my oil from MB Newcastle on eBay. I use 229.52 in the 350CDi and do the change myself.
Suck the oil through the dipstick hole, filter on top of engine front 9f passenger bank so dead easy to get to. All you need in terms of tools is a 14 flute oil filter cap remover and ratchet.
When doing the job remove oil, open filter housing, remove filter, pour at least 3 litres of oil into the filter housing to prime pump etc before reassembly then fill sump normally.

Takes about 30 minutes.
If you look at the schedule to see what else is needed to do and follow it you should be fine.
Keep a notebook detailing when and what was done and keep all receipts in a folder. Every but as good as stamps in the service book in my mind.

Buy genuine Mercedes oil, and filter and dont forget a sunp plug copper washer .Then take them , and the car to a reputable shop , to have them change it .This way it will be cheaper .Not brain science to change engine oil on your car . Some large shops will refuse to use your oil and filter .They will want to use their crap oil and filter ,,so be on your guard .

I can't remember the last time I changed my own oil.
Maybe I should. I'll keep a lookout in Lidl for the pumps they sell.
What do you do with the old oil?

I put into 2ltr plastic drinks bottles then take it to the local recycling centre and empty them.

I have to admire some of you and the drive to save a few quid I’m far too lazy and old to be bothered.

I too have found independents can be pretty close to main dealership prices, my last service recently was a ‘B’ service on my 2021 GLC300, this included brake fluid and cabin filter, the price was from memory around £490 which to me was not too bad plus I can drink their teas/coffees and admire the stock of cars I cannot afford.

I am lucky to own an older work on Mercedes ..I like the nice satisfaction , after i have done my own oil, and filter , change . Or any job . And this way i know its been done right .No --ho i wonder if they did this right,, or did they change the filters i paid for. Or is it that the garage or dealers just say they did . If i had to have a paid service ,then i would ask for all the old parts back . My uncle used to mark all his parts, like the oil filter, plugs , air fiters etc .. that way he knew if they had been replaced when he got his car back home .Not many true macanics now, Because it a remove and throw it away. Or send the part away to have it rebuild , at some other shop .And drop a new one in its place . So to-day, most mechanics are only fitters .
