I'm curious to know typical oil consumption rates of new 270CDi engines. I had to put 1.5lt of oil in my ML after just 5300 miles and again after just another 2300 miles when the ASSYST said I needed another 1.5lt. It might be that as the first top up was a complete oil change, it might not have been filled correctly by the dealer. I am anxious to make sure the engine isn't burning oil. Has anybody else had this experience?

When I first got my new E220CDi, it needed 2 or 3 litres over the first 5,000 to 10,000 miles. That was nearly 4 years ago and since then it's only needed around half a litre between services, which have settled down to about 16,000 to 18,000 mile intervals.

I also have a E220CDI. At 6000 miles ASSYST said add 1l. I since changed the oil for Mobil 1 and consumption seems to have dropped to zero.

I'm new to Mercedes as well. I've had my E220CDI since March, 2270 miles from ex-demo now about 8000. ASSYST says service A at another 5000 miles. But I don't believe in leaving the oil change that long, especially as our usage is 60 miles/day mixed urban and Mway.

All the technology is great but, as we say in the m/cycle world, these things can also be regarded as 'idiot lights'. Mine drove much better when I put clean oil in it. It will last longer too.

The CDI engines are known to burn oil until about 15K. Even after that they need more oil than other diesels i have had.

Also agree with oil changes, i change every 6k with MB filter and decent oil.

It is not unusual for a CDI unit to consume oil until the first service is out of the way. I don?t know why Jay thinks that the Cdi unit burns s more oil than the rest, in my experience these engines have very few consumption concerns. Just as a word to the wise and at risk of being shot down by all the people who read this site and believe that they know more than the people who make the cars they so dearly love, Don?t change the oil until the assyst tells you to, this will help the running in process and hopefully give you oil top up free driving in the future.
Enjoy the M.L

Maybach - I was also worried about the oil consumption in my 220cdi. When i spoke to the head technician at Evans of Leicester, thats what they told me....

Thanks

My thanks to all those who responded. I certainly feel a lot happier that my experience doesn't seem to be unusual.

I'm off to enjoy my ML.

All makes of direct injection diesels seem to consume oil upto about 10,000 miles, after which consumption subsides to negligible quantities.

A lightly loaded engine will often consume more oil due to bore glazing so don't forget to give your new diesel a good work out up some steep hills during the running in process to burn off any glaze.

So Diesels generally quit using oil after 10,000 miles. How-

How about The ML320? Mine is a 1999.
Needs a quart of Mobil One every 1,500 Miles.
SINCE NEW it used that much Oil---
Now has 90,000 miles.
No smoke...Just uses it.
I knew the 1st owner and he had the oil changed around every 9 or 10 thousand miles before the computer told him to.
In fact he said thats why he sold it to me and bought a new 2003 lexus SUV.... He doesn't like messing with adding oil.
(I bought it for trade in price)

Try running the car on a low grade oil and give it some good work outs. Then change back to a good oil.
It could be tat the bores are glazed.
