Hello there again, my 1996 "n" W202 C220 Diesel is serviced every 6K and uses approx a litre of oil in that period, could this be considered excessive.
The car has 97k on the clock, it is not driven hard or made to labour, there is no smoke from the exhaust, and the engine is as clean as a whistle.
Also I have noticed the oil climbs up the dip stick way above the max mark when she has been parked over night. Does anyone have any thoughts, many thanks.

i would say its over-filled then, correct mark on the stick should be correct with a cold engine!!!

The spec in the manual reads 6.5 litres of oil filter inclusive, after filling the engine with this amount it reads max on dipstick. The engine is not over-filled, thank you.

Thank you I will give that a go. What oil would you recommend to use in this car? at the moment I am using Castrol magnatec mineral oil.

With the engine still in good condition I would go over to one of the fully synthetic oils that meet the 229.3 spec,,others may advise you better on this one

If you are putting 6.5 litres in, then it probably is overfilled as not all of the oil comes out when drained. You should only fill it up until the dipstick tells you the level is correct. Don't just put 6.5 litres in because the manual says that what it holds.

I stand corrected, is there a significant amount retained in the engine after draining?

Impossible to put an exact figure on it, but you should only fill say 3/4 of the required amount & then add oil sparingly until the dipstick says full. Keep in mind it may take 10 minutes or so for all the oil to flow through the engine to the sump and give the correct reading on the dipstick.

After running the engine, check the level again as the new oil filter will have taken some of the oil in. Again, remember to let the levels settle before taking a final reading.

That's how I do it anyway & have never overfilled any engines yet.
