Another oil question! :) so I’ve just purchased a 2005 W169 A150 petrol 3 door with 52k on t’clock, I’ve been emailing a few garages getting prices for a service and the 3 that have come back to me have all said ‘manufacturers recommended oil’ however they have all quoted 3 different grades, from the service book merc put in Mobil 10/40 at the start of its service life but there’s no info for recent services, so a couple of questions

1) what grade oil do I need for a 15 year old A class petrol with 52000 on the clock

B) as the engine gets older do you need to change to a different grade?

and finally, does it really matter ?

Thank you one and all

Just use whatever grade oil the drivers manual recommends , or as you say the 10/40 MB used last . Don’t over think it . You don’t need to change oil grade because you still have a low mileage car

Are you sure it was Mobil 1 10w40....

Just fo with what meets MB spec as written in the owners manual. I would say it would MB229,5 from that era

1st entry in service book in ‘07 states shell helix but no viscosity (MB service Preston) 2nd entry in ‘08 states Castrol 10/40 (MB service Bolton) 3rd states Mobil 10/40 (MB specialist Greenvale)
Since then no info has been given.

More likely 229.3 I'd think.
It's all in the handbook ....

You might get lucky as they may have motor oil in the car section.

I know the old ones are less fussy but looking at the merc grades for my car in the handbook, for a climate of between 5 degrees and 35 degrees literally every grade from 0W30 to 20W60 is permitted so it's not much use (and i'm guessing doesn't really matter) which is probably why you are gettign different recommendations. I've never really understood the weights but my 300k mile engine loses a good deal less oil when hot in summer on 15W40 over 10W40 (0,1L/3000miles versus 0,5L/3000miles) but I would have thought it would be the same as the 40 relates to viscosity when hot so gave uyp tryign to understand and just go with the 15W40.
