Hi

On a car left standing overnight, does the oil from the oil filter also run down into the sump especially as on the A class where the filter housing is screwed from the top ?

Hi,
Not normally, the filter should hold some oil which will only be released when the housing is unscrewed. This is proved when you liftup the filter to quickly after undoing and a trickle of oil wil be leaked. Its not much but there will be some left
