How do I remove the oil filter from my E300 TD 1997
I bought the special tool from Mercedes but it does not fit as it is too small.

See www.porthkea.com/filter.jpg

Is it a case of just undoing the 36mm nut at the top of the filter housing etc

Oil Filter

Hi Faz,

the 36mm hex is part of the top of the housing for the filter. Mine was very tight the first time I took it off too. The reason its stiff is that theres an O ring (a big one !) below the threads on the upper housing. You,l see it when you get it off. Mine needed so much grunt to remove, I worried about breaking the filter housing off the block. I used a 1 7/16 Imperial socket as I didnt have a 36mm. I like using the Hengst brand filters from Eurocarparts because they come with 3 new O rings, 1 big one for the housing & 2 small ones for the "spear" thing that goes down the middle of the filter. When youve got the top off the housing, the filter just pulls off the spear. Its always very tight but just pull!.

Thanks Sixpack.

I will return the special tool to the stealership and get hold of a 36mm socket and give it a try. I think that the special tool is for petrol engines.

The new filter I have is made by "coopers" - I bought this locally but I will try the German Europarts one you mentioned next time

If you get really stuck, I have a special tool called 'long flathead screwdriver' which fits perfectly in the side when fitted with 'hammer'

Its a risky one.., but sometimes you just have to go for it..
Be careful not to knock the filter too hard though - you may ruin the thread.

Re: oil filter removal tool

The correct "tool" is just a 36mm socket such as the hazet 2169-36 which is Mb part number : 606 589 010 900 and costs about a fiver from the stealership
