Oil for ML 270

Hi,

I have a ML270 2002 and I am not sure what oil to use. My understanding was that I should use Mobil 1 0W/40 5L , but when I went into Halford the book said Mobil 1 ESP 5W/30 4L.

Where do I find out which is the correct oil and my car is a diesel so do I need a special type of oil?

Regards,

Mas

Mobil 1 0W/40, fully synthetic is the oil that i use in mine, its not always easy to find......shop around, expect to pay around £45 for 4 litres (you need 7.5 litres for the ML).

The main thing is that it meets the spec 229.3 or better 229.5

Costco is the cheapest in the UK

Thanks, Halfords are doing it for £38 for Mobil 1 0W/40 5L. Based on the info above this must be the right one. But strangley they also have the same oil and the details are marked for TURBO DIESELS.

That's OK. Your ML is a Turbo diesel.

Turbo Diesel graded oil has detergents in, ordinary oil does not!

I've been running mine on Lucas 0W30 Fully Synth for about 30K now which exceeds Merc spec requirements, but didnt realise about the detergent properties, so next oil change (unless I can find a detergent additive) Ill be switching to Diesel graded oils!

One of the things I have noticed on the thinner oil is that unless the oil level is full (or near full), on cold start, you get more tappet noise.

Oilman has a good thread running on the top of the Tech section about oils.

Thanks alot for the advice. I was just concerned that I might buy the wrong oil.

Thanks.
