Hi i just got myself a 1995 208D sprinter. It has a 2299cc Diesel in it.

Despite checking in the Oil and water when I brought 2 weeks ago it and finding them clean, I now find that I have Oil in the water.

I am either exceptionally unlucky or the guy who sold it is a c**t.

It seems that there is no water in the oil (no rainbows) and the engine does not overheat even on the motorway. Some pressure does build up in the water tank.

So a few questions.
1, Does this engine have a water cooled oil filter? (it's my only hope!)
2, Is this definitely the head gasket?
3, If i continue to drive it in this state, and keep an eye on the temp to make sure it does not overheat, is this going to do any additional damage?
4, Does anyone have any further info about these engines?
5, Is it worth trying steelseal or some similar product as a temporary fix?

Thanks

Sam

Sam, Is it worth asking the previous owner if he has had any work done on the head in recent times, could be that the water system was not cleaned out fully before. If you have Oil in the water it will turn the colour of ceamy coffee in a very short time, if the oil stays normal colour then a fair bet is that you DO NOT have water in the oil. Personally I would keep an eye on the temp and Oil and see how it goes.

oil in coolant can also be caused by leaking oil cooler... had this in one of my old cars.

Oil cooler?

oil in coolant can also be caused by leaking oil cooler... had this in one of my old cars.

Does anyone know if the oil cooler uses the water system on these 2299cc engines?

Thanks

fixed?

I poured in a load of Steel-Seal head gasket sealent and have driven the van 3 times now..

When I look in the Oil the creamy residue is gone and there now appears to be no oil in the water. Is the steel seal just acting as a detergent or could this really have worked?
