Hi all, Am new to this list and to Mercedes in general. I have just aquired a 1980 300TD wagon that has a substantial oil leak that seems to be emenating from the area of the head just below the center intake manifold. It is using about a quart of oil every 180 miles and is making an impressive mess and stink. The car runs fine and has 130,000 miles, has been serviced regularly and had a valve job two years ago. It is impossible to see the actual source of the leak either from above or below due to the manifolds and and other parts in the way. I would like to find out if this is a known issue with this model. One odd thing I have noticed is that the intake manifold and air filter assembly are clearly pretty new. Can anyone associate my problem with a cause and cure?

Thanks
Sean

Have a look on the rocker cover and follow the breather pipe from the rocker cover It goes into a T piece then the pipes run along the top of the inlet manifold with a connection going into the inlet manifold at each cylinder intake make sure the pipes are all connected and are not split

thanks 190 for the suggestion. I took a look but did not find the routing that you described. I did find a breather/line for the oil sump that runs up toward the front of the crankcase and over to the underside of the air intake. This looks like it might be the source especially as I have discovered the oil pressure in the engine is probably too high, and that there is also excessive air pressure in the crankcase. It's even forcing oil out of the Oil filler hole in the rocker cover. I now suspect blowby in the cylinders and fear it's the end for this motor. What do you think?

I wouldn?t think the engine is US at that sort of mileage I have seen the Mercedes diesel engine doing in excess of 250,000 mls I would check all crankcase breathers on the engine and make sure they are clear also check there is not to much oil in the engine you say the oil pressure is to high. I have a 190D 2.0 it has 160 on the clock and still drives like new the oil pressure sits at 3 and after a good run drops to just over 2 I change the oil every 4,000 mls and never have any problem. I would try a tin of forte engine flush and change the oil & oil filter
