Oil leaking and odour in air ventilation C220 CDI (202).

Over the last week or so I have noticed that on top of the plastic engine cover there is engine oil seeping through the strip of plastic with the ‘Mercedes Benz’ logo on it. This piece of plastic is held in place by clips which leaves a fine gap where the leak is evident.
At the same time when I switch on the ventilation there is a very strong odour that wafts through the cabin. The odour smells like hot engine oil and is unbearable.

I’d be very grateful if anyone can suggest a likely cause and let me know how worried I should be.
The car is W reg saloon and has covered 129k.

Thanks.

Had a similar problem with my ML - turned out to be a blown injector seal.

A fair chance that it is carbonised diesel, and not oil.

Get it checked asap as the above can only get worse.

This evening I went out for a short journey and there was a bleep from the dash board. On the dashboard the oil symbol (an oil can) appeared with the word "Hi" next to it. I took this as meaning that there is too much engine oil present. the light went out shortly afterwards. I have not added any oil to the car since it was serviced in Dec 07 as when I check the level it is always at the maximum marker on the dipstick. I will get it checked out this week and try to find out what is going on.

Update:
I booked my car in today to a local MB independent specialist. The injector seals were replaced as they were leaking oil. The repair cost was £128 and I was impressed with the service.
