Hi chaps.

This is probably a technical question, but how accurate is the built in oil Guage in my W210 c220cdi?

On the dippy I am showing full but not more than full.

On the level, my oil level Gage shows either - oil fine of oil over filled.

On driving, once the temp is up to normal 80 or so, the oil level over filled and beeps sometimes.

I'm inclined to ignore this as on the dipstick it seems fine. Should the dippy be the best guage?

I would think so.

They can show too high sometimes,, if the car is used for short journeys this does happen

It is hardly ever used for short journeys. Usually beeps and flashes the message to reduce the quantity of oil after about 30 minutes driving and usually on a long incline.

I think it is probably just a bit high so that if the oil expands when hot and with a bit of a tilt from going uphill is just enough to set off the warning.

I would expect this to stop in a few hundred miles as a bit of the oil gets used. Forgot to mention that it has just been serviced.

Mt W203 doesn't have a dipstick at all. The car should hold 6.5L but has never shown more than 6.2L, even after a service, where they used 6.5L of the oil I supplied!

It went as low as 5.4L but still never asked for more oil.

I did gingerly top it up 100mls each 24hrs and got it to 6.5L and it was fine - no overfull warning.

When I first found out how to check the oil level, mine showed 5.7 litres.
Despite adding over 1 litre, it refuses to show more than 6.4 litres.
It has never asked for oil or said it has too much, a dipstick would be nice.

Don't worry about it, you know you have'nt put way too much in so you cant do any damage, it will stop aftera few miles as the use a bit anyway.

Doesn't have a dipstick ???
What's up with that ?

Replacing a simple and well proven component with some complicated electronic thing. Have they learned nothing?
