My oil light has come on twice in the last month. Each time it has lit up 10 - 15 miles from a cold start and has gone off again after a few minutes. The oil pressure has remained very good and the oil level is normal. There are no apparent oil leaks from the engine. The car (1990 300SE) had a 54000 mile service 3 months ago so has had filters etc changed recently. Is this just a blip in the oil level sensor or is there something more ominous on the horizon?

If the oil presure is good,it has to be the sensor.

I dont know how the merc oil pressure switch is built, but a similar intermittent fault on an old mini of mine once led to a leak developing from the body of said switch and a total loss of engine oil whilst driving, keep checking your oil level until you are sure that this is not happening to your car. Maybe its no cause for panic but you will be stranded if it fails like mine did.

we went through 4 sensors in 80,000 miles

on an Alfa 155, with no loss of oil or pressure at all. Just do as the others say, keep an eye on the level and price up a replacement sensor in the meantime
It might be worth noting whether you are in a particular uphill or downhill orinetation when it happens.
