Hi, I’m new to the site after recently purchasing a 2003 ML 270. I have an intermittent problem with the oil light coming on. Oil level is fine, I’ve plugged it in to a code reader which shows short circuit an level sensor. Looking at the level sensor it looks tight to replace does anyone know if this can be done without lowering the sub frame.
Appreciate any info.

Are you sure the sensor is faulty? Quite common for light to come on when oil is hot and expanded if it is full or slightly overfull on dipstick. I always underfill by about 1/8" to prevent.

OP says level is fine and the code reader shows a short at the sensor.

Had the same issue, as you say the oil level sensor is very difficult if not impossible to access without some serious dismantling, quite frankly I couldn't be bothered so I unplugged it, The dipstick doesn't lie ;)

Yes I thought it would be difficult. Is the light on all the time when you unplug it?

No, but it was coming on fairly frequently combined with a flashing "oil level too high" message on the dash and a really annoying beep  anyway did another oil change and double checked the quantity before re-filling, dipstick always showed oil level a little below the upper mark. Code reader (Icarsoft2) showed it as a stored fault .

regarding oil, on a change 7.5 litres brings the oil level on the dipstick to just over half way. First time i changed the oil i thought i had miscounted putting oil back in and ended up with 8.5 litres in the engine, used a suction pump to take the excess out again.
