A friend's Mercedes 5 litre engine has just has a major service. After it was driven about 7 miles the display read that it was short of oil, which it wasn't. The garage tried to reset the warning information without success so it now has to have a new oil sensor. Is this a coincidental problem or has anyone else had this happening following an oil change/service. If so, did the garage do the repair without charge.

yes carol same problem with C280 new sensor fitted but took its time in going out cleared itself after many visits to stealership. gives false sense of security you really need this working just in case you are low on oil especially if full pelt down motorway, others might see different but in my mind its there for a reason:)

You dont say what car the 5.0 V8 is fitted, if its a W140 S class or Coupe the sensor is inside the engine and to change it requires the engine lifting off its mounts so the sump can come off. Its a big job, mine failed last year and its on the list of things to do but I aint looking forward to it.

was the car serviced by merc dealer or at least a genuine merc oil filter fitted? ive come across a number of mercs now, my 1st w202 included, where if you use a non genuine oil filter, it can put the oil level warning light on. luckily mine had a dipstick so level was checked and ok. re started car and light came back on after a few miles, etc etc. asked at the merc stealer, they asked if id serviced it, i said yes, they asked if genuine filter was used, i said no, they said "theres your problem. its common" i changed filter (and oil again) for genuine and never had the problem again! might not be the problem in your case, but worth thinking about. the genuine filter at the time was £1.50 more!

The car is a CL500. My query was really to see if the fault was caused by the oil change at the service. If others have experienced a similar problem then it might be reasonable to expect Mercedes to take responsibility.

The service was done at a main dealer so Mercedes parts will have been used

Mine came on for no reason, car hadnt been serviced prior to the light coming on, the sensor wire comes out of the block on the drivers side of the engine, if you look underneath the car at the joint between the sump and the block you might see some oil seeping from the wire.

I would be interested to see how you get on with this and ask Mercedes in detail what they did to fix it assuming they do fix it.
