If your spending the money on fully synth then the extra £ for a new oil filter is almost insignificant. I would always change the filter at the same time. You can check out the thread posted by oilman for recommended oils here

Hi

Similar post a few days back, hope below helpful, but in brief Blobcat is right: given the price of oil, it isn't worth scrimping in filters & seals. And I reckon it isn't worth scrimping on the quality of fluids in your car: fuel, oil, gearbox, brakes, etc.

Oilman's advice has served me well too.

David

I have a C220 CDI W202 from 2000 and use Mobil1 0W40. It isn't cheap, I bought my last batch from Guy at Opie Oils ( http://www.opieoils.co.uk ). His advice was:

"With regular changes a good 5w40 or 0w-40 synthetic is ideal.

The Mobil 1 0w-40 would make a good choice, we dont stock the TD 0w-40 as it meets the same specs as the normall 0w-40 so we suspect it is the same oil."

I change my oil every 6,000 miles for the same reason that I use good quality fuel/brake fluid/anti-freeze - it seems that keeping all the fluids in good order dramatically extends the life of the car as they lubricate, clean, and protect all the bits that move and wear.

The oil change is very simple you'll need a filter wrench from Halfords to fit the fluted plastic cap, the sump plug is a standard socket (get a new plug washer, also from Halfords or even your MB dealership as just pennies), new filters available from Opie. The engine sump cover is a bit of a faff to get off, there are bolts at the front and rear and the ones at the rear are a bit hard to see. Lots of blue elephant bog roll is helpful as is a plastic sheet to protect your drive. Haynes manual helpful too.
