Nothing under bonnet, one each side of dash, no relays in them, trying to find where the relay is for the air suspension pump, and witch one it is, a diagram would be handy, cant find any panel's in boot, have the owners book that came with car , but that says its under the bonnet !! and its not.

Small point but please clean out the leaves and detritus from the bottom of the windscreen. Let it build up and your scuttle drains will block. This then means rain water flows though your heater into your foot wells causing a world of electrical pain.

They get cleaned quite regular, Its just bonnet , boot windows etc have been open all day (Heat) and have been replacing air & fuel filter + i live out in the country surrounded by trees and fields, may be able to make it out from photo, becomes a pain in the arse when the leaves start to fall

they have 4 normal fuse boxes and on the battery side some fusable links for other stuff

  • the one the guys have shown you... the front SAM usually has a cover with 4 torx bolts holding on a matt back plastic cover about 7 x 11 inches. On the tractor engine'd ones it seems they put the engine ecu on the top to hide it
  • the ends of the dash on both sides have fuses
  • the last is behind the rear arm rest
  • in the boot its basically an ECU holder, with, depending upon equipment 9 other boxes of tricks in the inner wings or behind the fake back of the boot where early ones will have a second 25kg battery hidden away

Thanks that was very informative and much appreciated . So has the SAM unit shown in photo to be removed to access the fuse box, and is the SAM unit missing a plastic cover ?

The debris doesn't even have to build up, one leaf can block a scuttle drain. I could be mistaken, but the drain on the bulkhead below the scuttle one looks full of debris as well. A right pain in the proverbial these drains are.

RHD vehicles - On the passenger side there's a bit (small 1" lever on inside face), you depress on the bonnet hinge it allows the bonnet to open a few more degrees. Having done that, you can walk round the drivers side and do the same and now get a fair bit more opening. Its helpful when playing with stuff at the back of the engine bay. Like the crank sensor. Closing the bonnet when done is normal, but the levers click as they pop back to normal.

Can't see clearly....

It looks like the engine ECU is clipped on top of the conventional cover. Two ideas

1) there are large holes exactly where the front fastenings are (along the side). And the rears nearest the wiper area are probably after the back of the ECU. Maybe the idea is you leave it attached to the lid. Undo the lid and wiggle it all off together ???

2) Unclip /release the ECU and fold carefully away to get clearance that might be the normal SAM lid. The four fastenings need to be undone. you'll need a UJ or ball end drivers to do it easily. Just thinking might be an allen key 3 or 4mm

The fastenings are captive to the lid they don't come off the lid. Making it a nuisance as its hard to know when undone enough and as you wiggle one usually catches a thread. Should be great fun if the ECU stays with it and those mega thick wires give u a fight.

you are getting old. The pictures above are from left hand drive cars.... hence my comment to remember they are back to front. the big clue is in the name Drivers side SAM. It will look like that but on your side of the car

everything I wrote or the pictures I have posted are helpful…. but you look for them on your side:)

below curtesy of powerpoints flip horizonal feature, the SAM is now magically where it should be

Thanks what a stupid place to put it, would have thought it would have been more accessible than that , Merc seem to try their hardest to make things difficult.

Probably true, but the S Class is their flagship model and priced from £55,000 new, they obviously don't want just anyone playing about with the electrical systems... which is fine when new, but when a car is 5, 10, 15 years old, it makes things very awkward!
