Hi

The OM642 or maybe it is called the OM 646 engine, the new 2987 cc quad cam turbo diesel engine appears to be rated at 231 bhp/510nm when fitted to a car and 204bhp/440nm when in the Vito/Viano (120cdi etc.). My question is, is the engine restricted in some guises or are we talking about a different engine altogether. I browsed several websites which dont seem to know the answer. Are there any knowledgeable Mercedes engine gurus out there that can enlighten me.

thanks, Rich

Hi Rich,

The most powerful version is currently fitted to the latest E class (at least according to the MB website and the brochures I have). The O/P is 224HP and 540Nm of torque. The Engine as fitted to my E is 642920 and it is a peach

Different outputs are normally done with the software, the main 642 lump will be the same. It is interesting why they change the output for different applications

Was an E300TD, now a Lexus LS400
Is that engine output at the flywheel, or at the rear wheels?

Maybe different powerbands are required for different applications. Peak figures are good for marketing blurb and pub boasting, but there's more to an engine.

(I would say that as my engines are somewhat puny :))

I appear to have 540Nm of torque from 1,600 to 2,400 revs and peak 224hp at 3,800 revs.

I wonder if the van's curve is flatter but wider?
Probably as the 280CDI (same engine) has a peak of 400Nm from 1,400 to 2,800 revs although peak 190hp is at a higher 4,000 revs.

What's the difference in list price between a 280 and 320 given the same spec?

£2,145 difference for either Elegance or Avantgarde trim . E280CDI is available in Classic specification the E320CDI isn't.

Am I being too cynical if I think that you are paying £2145 for a couple of lines of different code?

Sorry mate, not aimed at you; a "royal you" if there's such a thing!

Amazing how they can get away with it. I wonder how much it would cost to 're-map' a 280 to the performance of the 320?

The Vito has the same torque band, 1600-2400 rpm but is limited to 440 nm with a peak 204 bhp. This is why I asked the original question as to if there is any difference in the engines. It now seems as though its only lines of code that are different for different applications as suggested. So thanks for all the comments. Dare I play with it after the warrenty period?

Incidently the Vito 120 cdi has been about since last May 2006. It maybe the waiting list has extended to July 2007 not suprisingly as the thing is a beast on steroids!!
