316cdi 2004 SPRINTER, 86 W124 2.5 TD ESTATE
Some years ago I popped a 1986 OM602 engine and autobox into my Sprinter. You might ask why! Well although the power from that turbo-intercooled lump was eye-watering I knew that that lump would not agree with the fuel I produce plus I much prefer automatic trans [even more important now my left knee is on it's way out]. Not only that being on a tight budget then and even more so now the thought / cost of an ECU / turbo / going down was too scary and finally the 2.5 engine is on a lower tax bracket than the original 2.7.

Although the engine and box are as good as the day I fitted them [then at 145k and now 225k the old gal could do with a just little more umph as it's a tad hilly here and it seems that either other drivers are getting evermore impatient and or new vehicles are more powerful. Either way my 'toy' 2CV beats the Sprinter hands down to give you an idea. She's fine on the flat but on Motorways it's lane 1 all the way.

Does anyone know if there's another Naturally Aspirated non ECU OM6 version engine that would be a direct replacement and would take my auto box without mods that would remain at 2.5 litre? These days I'm just about capable of changing very like for very like and am not looking for a massive uplift in power. A local tinkerer said there's a 20 valve version that should make a difference. Can anyone advise please?
