New to the forums and this is my first post so sorry if this has been asked in previous threads!

Recently bought a E350 65 plate om642 after having a om651 for best part of 5 years pretty much problem free even after all the horror stories id read online about timing chains injectors inlets etc

I've looked online and can't really seem to find anything about reliability or any common issues of this particular year/gen engine, is there anything to look out for? Engines done 80k and has a full Merc and indy history recently had a full service from a local mechanic and service on the 9G - world's apart from the previous 7g!

Thanks

Welcome

The only thing really to watch is the Oil Cooler Seals, £700 job to replace 2 £5 parts. Keep an eye out on the rear of the engine tray, this is where the oil will run out.

In the North West take a trip to @GAD Tuning North ;)

OM642 known issues:
1. EGR valves can crud up. Swine to get at on the back right if the engine (looking from front)
2. PCV valves can fail - swine to get at on the back left of the engine.
3. Oil cooler oil seals can fail - £5 part but 9 hour job. Yours should have the improved ones but they can still give trouble. Look for oil drips under the vehicle and investigate from there.
4. Batwing seals can fail causing oil condensate to drip onto turbo actuator and swirl flap motor. To be safe change at each service (cheaper and easier than replacing the bits it destroys when it fails).
5. Front main bearing can fail due to oil starvation if filters aren't pre-filled when doing an oil change. Always pour a few litres of oil into the filter housing before refitting the filter cover.

That's about it.
It reads worse than it is in reality. The OM642 is generally a very good engine - especially in later 350 variants.

6. exhaust manifold double layer inner liner brittles and destroys turbo...
7. Timing chain do stretch, but damages are still very rare...

Thanks for all the Input! Had my mechanic do the service and happend to pop in as he was getting the fuel filter changed, looked a pig of a job..

Only thing he noticed was the fabric on the left air intake has seen better days and has a rather large hole.. time to order a new one!

Again thanks for the replys chaps, much appreciated!

In sum, a swine.
