Morning guys, I have been Looking at buying a 2010-2011 e250, but have been reading that this engine seems to suffer from timing chain failure. Is this true and does this also effect the e350 om651 engine also it’s really putting me off buying one now because of this horror story

clk3202001,sl6002003 with everything regrettably sold ,A class 170cdi auto. NG/TF1800 ML250
A lot depends on previous use, history. Its likely,in my view that there is less chance of issues with high miles than low miles,it seems that stop start use does nothing for a chain, gears ,sprockets longevity and more regular than recommended oil changes also help ..like all engines some give problems and this engine is no different it seems very happy in the commercial use world ,not so much in the private motor.
I bought a 50k miles very clean ml with OM651 so far no issues, but I dont use it for short runs unless I need the internal space,I dont use stop start. I change oil at around 6k miles or yearly,I change the oil filter at every second oil change.
Would I buy another OM651 with 50 or more k miles on it,prob not .unless I had history from dealer confirming chain, sprockets have been replaced.
For me I am more concerned with the emissions electronics and ludicrous expense of same than chain, sprockets which I can deal with myself at reasonable costs

I’m sure there are a lot of OM651 engines out there that don’t present with timing chain wear but there are a few that do as the miles rack up which may be determined by type of use the car gets, poor servicing or simply poor quality components. The OM642 V6 engines don’t have timing chain problems but like all engines can suffer other problems like leaking oil cooler seals but other than that are a very reliable robust engine and would be/is my choice.

As above , short interval oil changes and not using stop start , best permanently disabled .

One memorable recipe for disaster was 15k and 19k servicing and the car came from London !

Ok thanks malcom and I’m learning towards the e350 more now because of that reason I would prefer to do oil sills than repair a timing chain problem

If you do go down the E350cdi route just make sure you buy the 265bhp engine rather than the launch 2009/10 231bhp version the uprated engine and gearbox are much better

They still have oil cooler seal problems though

I did mention this to the OP in #3 of this thread I assume once done with the new Viton seals the problem should be resolved but time will tell the hot vee is a big part of the problem IMO.

The 265bhp cars do sell at a premium but worth paying the extra for

Nope, they will still fail but last longer than the original ones

So within my budget a 234 bhp e350 is a bad engine compared to the 264 bhp one it’s all so confusing I have a set amount of money so I can’t really push for more there is high mileage ones on there say with just over 10000 miles on the clock should I stay away from them or is that really not a lot for this v6 engine
