Does anyone have the dimensions for a w124 300TE 1988 propshaft, 4spd auto E&S box . chassis no 1240902F0755**, as I think I may need a replacement.
There's a horrible graunching at idle in D ( not in P,N or R) which goes away as the revs rise above 900. I can feel a slight vibe when under load, it vanishes completely when load taken off. The vibe resumes as the revs drop down below 900.
All help gratefully received, as ever.

Take the propshaft to a propshaft man. They are easily fixed. There is also a support bearing on the shaft that may need replacing.

Also, the coupling in the middle only deflects a couple of degrees so the needles get stuck. I took my shaft to a guy and he hit it with a hammer to loosen the needles, no charge. It was good as new after that.

It's a bit far south for me.

Actually, it was a mechanic at the dealers that told me about the local propshaft man.

Lorries are always getting work done on propshafts so if you know any lorry drivers....

thanks again Turnip

my mechie said to get another prop-shaft, so he thinks this one is beyond repair. I've found one locally and am picking it up tomorrow. Let's hope it does the trick. In the meantime, my C280 is under the knife. Not just tappets, but the ignition has been arcing as well.and four new paws. and a new set of brakes last week. I hope the kids don't want to eat this month.

Hope you have some luck with the 300te Myros, Props dont usually go wrong apart from the bearings and bushes, as turnipsock says the bearings can be fixed with a hammer and some lubrication.
Regards
John

thanks Johnny

I really like the size of the car. I've not driven anything this big since I drove a lorry across Europe one autumn. This is definitely more fun, and nearly as big.
I know it sounds stupid, but I cant figure out how the rear backrests fold down to enlarge the load area. I can tip the base up ok, and get the headrests out, but I'm bu**ered if i can get the seats to tip forward.

The handbook is typically MB on this, glossing over the procedure and not mentioning any levers to pull, buttons to press or secret incantations which must be performed.

Any hints?

there are no levers to pull or magic commands, once you've got the headrests out and the seat squabs lifted then the backs should just fold forward (fold the short section first).

If they refuse to budge (which isn't unheard of) then look on the side of the seat and you'll see a spring button - give them a pull and see if that frees the seat.

If they are still stuck then you may need to be a little rough with them :)

well, I had to show them who was boss

but I got them down eventually. It was the little spring lever thing being a bit sticky on the driver's side. Boy, you could have a disco back there with the seats down.
I'm still waiting on my C280, as the coil packs delivered by a certain motor factors were the wrong ones, and they didn't have the right ones, and mechie won't let me take it away until he has fixed it. It was alarming to watch the HT shorting out into the cam cover. Luciano thinks the tappets were just a that time of life issue. He can't find any oilflow problems surounding them.
I can't really complain , as I've done 70,000 in 5 years and this the only engine spend I've had. The car is 12 and 110,000 up, as I keep having to remind myself.
It looks good on its new paws though. I'll post an update on the subjective feel of them on this modern car, as I've only driven the SL on them and they feel superb on that.

I have my beloved C280 back now

like a swiss watch again. the tappets weren't the culprit, it was a spark plug. The centre electrode body had detached itself from the outer threaded portion, and was clattering about in time with the compression/decompression, sounding for all the world like a knackered tappet.
As it was a fancy Bosch Yttrium which I had fitted only 2 months ago, they will be hearing from me regarding a portion of the bill.
The new tyres beat the old Michelin Pilot Primacys by miles, and they aren't even scrubbed in yet. Quieter, grippier and nearly as comfy. and 75% of the cost.

fixed the graunching in D on the 300 TE

it was the engine mounts. The new ones stood nearly 3 cms taller than the old ones. Tranny is quiet as a mouse now, and smooth in D at idle.
Just the leak from self-levelling supension to fix now and she's as good as new.
