They probably can but won't.
Many garages and dealers in particular won't touch parts they don't source.
i have a dealer that is prepared to have a go £230 then if it dose not work i still have to pay but they will then quote me for a new one fitted ( bit of a one of favour for an x worker ), at a guess the new one will come in around the £700 mark

What gearbox/car? Most tcu’s are locked to car, so a secondhand one would have to be virginized and then coded.

Ok, an early 5 speed, don’t get problems with separate tcu’s. I can’t remember if a s/hand will just plug and play. What’s the problem?

well it did plug and play a little bit it ran but only in 2nd and 3rd gear (D-mode) no paddle shift in manual, and not in limp mode, my old one would not let me select sport manual or comfort on the switch gone into limp mode, i put the secound hand one in and got my S-M-C button back on,i tried new conductor plate before the TCM.

Trouble is sometimes generic code readers lead you up the wrong path with wrong codes. :(

Where are you located, maybe someone here can recommend a good trusted Indy with Star to get things read and fault find rather than throwing parts at the problem

Just because it’s had the codes read on Star doesn’t always mean they have understood what is being shown, an error code doesn’t always mean that that single part has/is failing only that it needs further investigation to find the root cause, for example the fault shows on the TCU but on delving into it further it’s actually another component that is sending spurious signals, only in doing the further tracing will the actual fault be found

it did have a turbine speed sensor fault but that was cleared in the early days of my problems and has not come back and not showing on the star reader

dealers can add new stuff to cars at big prices - they are seldom any good at fixing stuff or doing it cheaply...

after a few years people find ways around the deliberate ideas to stop home/independent garages doing the job... often those in the know can do the job but its hard work finding where they are to get the job done...

if you have more than one fault it tends to be painful and here great indepenant specialist can save the day. very few out there but often worth using them rather than so one close by
