Just after a few opinions on an annoying noise I am experiencing on my W220 S320.

So first some background. The previous owner had spent fortunes on this car, the history confirms that it has had loads of work done by a MB dealer on various things, including the gearbox, steering suspension etc. He also tells me that the "noise" that I am referring to has been there for a long time and the main dealer had failed to diagnose it but swapped various suspension and steering parts under warranty in the process of rectifying the problem. Last week the car had new discs and pads on the front and the garage checked the hubs etc, nothing untowards was reported.

To keep this short and sweet here is a summary of the symptoms.

1 The noise can be described as a soft rumbling or rubbing noise which seems to be coming from the front offside of the vehicle.
2 It is always worse when cold, and virtually disappears once the car has warmed up
3 It does not seem to be relative to speed although its most noticeable around 30mph
4 There is no steering wobble, or any issues with the steering or general handling
5 I am not getting any malfunctions on the computer
6 The sound is not noticeable when driving straight, turning left or right does not seem to change things
7 There is no suspension knocking and the car is rock solid at speed.

Whilst the problem has not yet caused an issue, I don’t like driving with a potential issue undiagnosed. I would appreciate any views, comments or combined wisdom from the members maybe so I can at least give the next technician that looks at my car some pointers!

Did you mean to type this? Not sure it makes sense!

Does the frequency of the noise change with road speed? Engine speed?

Sorry I just re read that line your right its not worded very well. What I mean is that the noise is not affected by any specific direction of the car. In other words its there pretty much when the car is first driven, the road surface, direction etc makes no noticeable difference.

You should look at the fluid in the power steering and see if it is foaming,,this will let air in.

Are any hoses touching anything that they should not be.

There are pages of things to check

It will be the inside ball joint on the lower track control arm, tends to set up vibration cum noise on certain surfaces at certain speeds.. get someone to turn the steering fully to the left or right ..depending on which side the noise is from.. and watch the joint move as you attempt to turn the wheel against the stop.. about £35 each from MB

Have you tried swapping the wheels side to side or front to back to see if this makes any difference?

Thank you all for the responses, greatly appreciated.

I'll try swapping the wheels around this week, as I need 2 new front tyres so I'll get the tyre man to swap the left and right around. Thank you Malcolm for your advice I'll also check the power steering fluid as well. As for the ball joints, I'll probably ask my local indi to check this for me, although the car is due an MOT in the next couple of weeks so I may just wait and see what that throws up I am guessing that they would check the suspension and steering for such things.

It's like having a hole in your pocket owning a W220. Audi A8 is the way forward!

I must admit I like the A8 my brother has 4 of them (for work) all 4.2 long wheelbase jobs. But also not without some niggles!

I still think that cold weather and the steering box go well together on this, the steering box is where you say the noise is coming from, the MB list for checking these things is a mile long, so far from easy. Can you detect anything at low speed when cold

Yes its much worse at low speed when cold. I notice it more when starting out and it seems a little worse with the cold weather. It seems to virtually disappear when the car is warm and at higher speed.

An MB dealer (Greenoaks in Slough) had checked the steering etc and didnt find anything, but its certainly still there. I heard it this very morning!

When the car goes in for servicing it might pay you to ask them to change the fluid in the steering system,, there could well be a later spec fluid now

But the MOT should be a reasonable check for most of this right?

The MOT does not cover things like noises, it only covers suspension and steering parts that have too much free play, and most of these are knocking noises even if the owner has not noticed them.

Is changing the steering fluid a big expensive job?

I have found in the past Greenoaks in Slough to be not much help. Try Huges of Beconsfield or for a better price try

The steering on this car is rack and pinion rather than a steering box.

It could be the compressor for the airmatic suspension, that is on the front right of the car!
