Would appreciate opinions on whether the following car is good value:

1988 E230 TE Estate Manual
135k miles (fsh - main dealer until approx 50k then specialist, last service 133k) - 2 owners
New Mot (advisory on weeping shock & weeping steering box??)
Good bodywork
Drives fine (quiet engine)
Interior (black) good condition slight wear on drivers seat.

Owner wants £2k (but should be negotiable).

TIA

hello Matt,
230te's are a good compromise to the slighly slow 200 and slightly thirsty 300te.
They go on for ever just as long as they have been serviced correctly.
I think 2k is slightly over the top, especially if it has a dripping steering box, which will be quite expensive to fix ( only if it needs it though).
Colour is another factor. generally white or red are not as popular, and metallics are.
I have a 300te with nearly 200k (previously owned a 230te). Mine had a new headgasket at 120k, and gearbox job at 100k. Other than that it has been trouble free. You cant go wrong really. (But dont quote me!)
Offer £1500 and see how it goes.
Regards,
Mike.

I paid £1800 for a white 11/88 300TE 4-matic with 185K miles FDSH.

I agree with Mike that you should be able to talk them down (I have spent over £200 on mine in two weeks ownership to replace Fuel pump relay, HT set/Distributo and repair a corroded fuel line) and keep a reserve of cash!

You can always check autotrader.co.uk for a price comparison.

Ultimately though does the car feel like 'yours'?

After all it is worth what some one will pay for it! :)
