Is it a light or just a lense?
Has the car got auto lights on?

My Audi has an auto dimming mirror which has a small sensor which sounds like the one you describe. It also dimms the outside mirrors.

However, if it shines, you may not be alone.............!!!!!

That is the ambient light so that the cockpit is not in total darkness when driving at night. Pilots use these in aircraft.
They think of everything don't they?!!

I have used red ones when navigating a boat at night. (Keeps the night vision spot on). Not so sure about adding shorter wavelengths to the spectrum though.

Same orange light in CLK (W209). Strange thing is, it's still on in broad daylight, with the door open or closed and the key out.

As per above it is part of the ambient lighting package. You also have lights over each door handle and in each footwell. Once you drive at night and notice that you can still see everything in the car without it affecting your night vision you realise how nice your Mercedes really is.

Same with mine, it keeps the interior from total darkness even if the interior lights are switched off when getting in or out. It does switch itself off after a while if you lock the car up though.
