Having had a full diagnosis showing no faults, the technicians fortunately couldnt start my car, thus showing that i wasnt imagining a starting problem which only happens after a couple of weeks of trouble free starting. I do average mileage, and as you can imagine just when you convince yourself that perhaps its over .....it happens again......previous owner said he has had this problem for the past 4 years !!!!.....eeek......am i screwed ? Incidentaly the technicians have cleaned my crank sensor up thinking that it may be the problem.......but only time will tell....what i need to know is what to try next if the diagnosis is wrong.

There are ways of checking and its basic motor mechanics.

Is there a spark,, this is easy to check from the coil or any plug lead.

If spark is OK, is there fuel, also easy to check by undoing the union where the pipe goes into the injection system preferably where the fuel goes into the distributor .

These are the only 2 things to stop it from running

Thanks Malcom......everything is working fine but something just packs in occasionally, and then returns to normal after an hour or so....i figure it must be electrical. so what electrical problems could there be ?

You say that but even the fuel is electric controlled,, the fuel pump relays are known to get badly dry jointed, and one can always pull it out and bridge pin 30 to 87 to test, that would be the first thing that I would check

I had the same problem a few years ago.I was at the end of my tether as you obviously cannot anticipate when the problem will occurr.( I even had the immobiliser disconnected) I was recommended a good auto electrician. He fixed it in half an hour. I am not mechanically minded but he went under the bonnet and came out with a small printed circuit board about 3" x 4".He showed me two points which were effectively burnt. He simply used a solder to repair.I have never had a problem since.

My 560 had this problem. It was the fuel pump relay, which an automotive electrician sorted for £30 cash in hand. You could tell it was going to happen when you turned the key to the first position and there was no hum. If it hummed, then it started.
