Our cars key isn't working. The car can be open manually but the ignition key won't turn.

Sounds silly, but check that the transmission is in P or N.

We can't turn the egnition, so there's nothing showing on the dash.

Is there tension on the steering lock? Give the wheel a serious wiggle whilst keeping pressure on the key to turn it.

Yes, the dash should light up with the door open, so I would think your battery is flat.

If you don't have a battery charger, have a look at the SIP Chargestar Smart 18 Automatic from Toolstation, £50 with free next business day delivery (extra £5 for Saturday delivery). Clever beastie that does AGM, Gel and Wet batteries (yours is probably a wet battery), bought one recently and have used it twice so far, easy to set up and seems to do a good job. However, it is not a battery conditioner - which you use to keep a charged battery fully charged during long term storage (I now have 2 of those, one on my SLK in her garage, can't use the other one on the s204 on the driveway!).

As Alex says above, I'd be trying the battery first as I've seen more than one thread similar to this (and had something similar myself a few weeks ago) where flat battery was the problem. Other culprit seems to be the EIS/ESL (electronic ignition system/electric steering lock), not seen a post where the key itself was the criminal - assume Krista you have 2 keys and have tried both. Replacement keys are not cheap, I think they're about £200!
