The reading on the outside temperature guage is fine at start up but then the temperature increases as the engine warms up, I take it that this is a fault and that I should be getting the true external temperature, if so any suggestions on how to fix it :)

Check that the sensor is correctly positioned behind the front bumper, it may have been repositioned if the bumper has been off and be tucked in beside the radiator, hence is affected by the engine temperature.

It can get pushed back behind the bumper. i had the same problem, all that was needed was to pull out the probe and small panel. Its in the hole beside the passenger side front foglight. If there is simply a hole there then you have the same problem. There is a black plastic panel and the probe sticks out through it.
