Just bought my first MB (C250TD) from a local independent specialist. Its a 2000/W model with 36k on the clock.

Since I do 25k per year, and I'd like to keep the car as long as poss I thought I'd ask for unscheduled oil changes in between services. Presumably this can only be good for the car.

I got the dealer to do the oil change before he sold me the car and I am now a bit worried since the oil level is about 3mm above Max on the dipstick. Basic knowledge of cars and oil pressure tells me this is not a good thing, but just how much of a problem is it?

I rang the dealer and he said it will probably be because the oil is hot - wait till it cools down and then check again. Did this and its the same level.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Aurora.

Hello,

The Max line was to prevent the oil level being too high and blow out from the gasket, The fluid level will varies with it's temperature, the engine oil will expain when hot, so the oil level when it hot will then be higher the cold.

The oil level should be within the max and min level, during it operating temperature. Which is simular principle as the Automatic transmission fluid....

If u found your oil level was over the Max line when it cold, it will even go up higher when it's hot!!!! and will possibly come out from the gasket... so I think u better double check when the engine in it's operating temperature, if it really higher the the max line, then drain some of them out....

hope his can help... :D

You will find that just over the max is not a problem. As the engine uses some oil it will bring the level down.

then how about A/T fluid??
i found that there are some marks on the A/T dip stick.

"> 20c < > 80c <" something like that. that means at such a temp, the fluid should keep in between? so...
1, if the engine temp is higher than that, it should be higher also?
2, if the fluid is exceed this mark, will it harm the transmission system???

There is an alarm on your dashboard anyway. If the oil level is way too high you will loose the milage indication on the LCD screen and it will be replaced by an alert message like "oil level" or something like that. I think there is a sound as well. If it doesn't appear I would not worry!

That I wouldn't know. I've discovered I had that when they put too much oil in it after a regular oil change when I first got the car. I think it is in the manual as well.......

 Yes, In such Temperature range, the oil level should be between the arrow, and is not depend on your engine temperature, the ATF temperature was only depend on your transmission temperature, it will reach it working temperature (about 80c) after driving for about 10 mile. So it will expand after it hot.

IF the fluid exceed this mark, it will cause the fluid overflow and might damage the transmission component.

Someone did mention that, it will cause the fluid being bubbling, when it overfilled.

Hope this can help! :D

Thanks a lot GaryC!!!

by the way, recently i heard some "tiny click-click-click" sound once i shift the gear to "R". i've changed the A/T fluid a week before. i wonder whether the mechanic put too much A/T fluid or not. but the car runs smooth indeed. both "R" and "D" gear. so... any idea about this?

Hello,

Well, You could always check whether the oil was too much or not, by warm up the transmission system, to drive it about 10 mile, normally, then it should reach it operating temperature, then double check your oil ATF level, see whether it was higher then the max level....

I do have this problem before, in my old one, so what I have done, was to pump out some of the fluid...

But for the 'tiny click-click-click'noise, I really have no idea, sorry about that, but do u think is the sound of the electro hydrulic switch, when it operate??

Gary!
