Any opinions from the experts out there much appreciated.
My 98 Sprinter 310 used to be pretty good on fuel, now , it never comes close. it gets all the usual service items frequently, runs well, just a little smokey at times.

Any suggestions from the population.

Thats all been done, including the injectors changed. Only thing i never did was take the intercooler out and flush it through.

Was wondering if anyone out there had any info on inj pump timing or adjustments to mixture..?? Ta

Is the air filter OK?
On a diesel engine there is no mixture control, the throttle controls how the pump adds fuel to each air charge up to a limit (max delivery) which the fuel pump govenor (or ECU) is set up not to exceed.

Do not fiddle with any adjustments on the delivery pump you WILL need specialist equipment to set it correctly.

If there is black smoke there is either too much fuel or not enough oxygen, air filters and Egr valves are common causes of this, and perhaps a Maf if the engine has fancy electronics. The intercooler could also be restricted so get that checked out as well. The other causes (more expensive) are things like turbocharger and piston ring / bore wear and tear.

Other causes of increased fuel consumption are changes of driving habits or terain and the possiblity of binding or rubbing brakes, unless its realy bad you realy cannot tell from driving it if the parking brakes are not releasing fully or one front caliper is slightly sticky, only when you need to reach for the wallet more often does this one show up.

Check the vac pipes to the pump, also look at the advance and retard device on the end of the pump the seized and cause it to stick or not advance at the right time, dead common fault on these.
