Would appreciate any help please. I am a new owner and on a voyage of discovery with my 2001 C200 Kompressor.

I have just noticed a light humming noise coming from the overhead control panel. It is a steady low pitched drone and is present all the time. i.e. with key out, in or engine running. My initial thought is it is coming from what appears to be a speaker grills in the ohead panel. What are these used for?

Appreciate any thoughts

Regards

There is a little fan in the overhead cluster that draws the cabin air over the temperature sensor. They are prone to failure, or may be thrown off-balance by dirt. Try vacuuming or blowing over the openings to see if you can shift the dust.

Hi Laughing Gas, Tks for suggestion. I have done as you suggested re vacuum cleaner but was not too hopeful as I did not think this fan would be on without the ignition/motor on. There has been no change but certainly the low hum could be a fan.
Do you know if the overhead control panel vinyl/plastic cover pops off and if it does will this show the fan? Don't want to try to ease this cover off and break something.
Regards...

I dont think it is fused on its own, its fused with the whole overhead control pannel.

Hi,
Mine went and no end of cleaning and lubricating it would silence it, I ended up getting a new overhead panel from a breakers £30 from
http://www.mercman.net

No need to locate fuse just remove overhead control panel and unplug it, to try lubricating you will have to do this anyway.

Tks for response. Post #1 above describes humming problem I am trying to solve. Humming is there all the time. If it is the fan there must be something that should turn it off, when all the electrics are off, that is not working. Hence I am trying to locate fuse and controller for the fan. The overhead control panel is not mentioned in the fuse chart hence this question. Hope your Easter is going well.

Regards

The overhead unit is normally switched off when the car goes to sleep, when they go faulty they can stop the car from sleeping, leaving the Comand also in the sleep mode, in many cases this flatens the battery

Tks Malcolm. I have been assuming that it is a faulty controller that is causing the problem. As I understand your comment it can be a faulty overhead unit causing. Do you have any suggestions how to determine which component is causing the problem? Is the "overhead unit" one component comprising lights/fan etc.

Re your slogan....Is the corollary true? i.e. If you found out what was going on would you stop smiling?

I often get thse faulty bits sent to me where I take them to pieces to try and see why they fail, but no one has sent me one of these.

The panel has to be replaced, or the module inside, and nothing known yet for repairing

I am still working out what is going on :confused:
