I have a 1997 E320, and the overhrehead lights control cluster has started to make a veyr noisy humming sound. The cluster is the one attached to the rear view mirror stem and controls the internal and door activated lights.

Sounds like there is a faulty electrical component humming!

Anyone experienced same or has any ideas?

As Ellsy its part of the air temp control all part of the overhead control panel as its known.

When faulty they can run all of the time, running down the battery

This is an interesting thread Malcolm, vis a vis my tow bar question. I did notice as I pulled up, a slight humming noise from the small grill in the interior light unit. Can't recall if I've heard it before. It did stop when I switched off the engine.

Will try the hoover tomorrow. Is the part replaceable?

The fan in the overhead light console is replaceable (least ways it is on the clk, c, e class) but it maybe cheaper to get a 2nd hand overhead light console as i believe the fan is in the region of £40-50, you could try removing the fan and lubricating/greasing the armature, though this did,nt work for me i ended up replacing the whole light console.

Thanks Andy. Any recommendations for a place to pickup 2nd hand parts for an e class?
