Hi
I got my 1995 w124 E220 about a month ago, and its been great so far. Unfortunately last night it wouldn't start. The AA man got it going in the end by tapping on what I think is the OVP relay (passenger side under the cover behind the battery, tall silver relay with a fuse under a plastic cover on the top) Firstly am I right in thinking this is the OVP relay. Second does anyone know the part number and any suitable supplier? The car started fine this morning but I guess its worth replacing anyway to avoid future problems. Thanks for your help, Neil

That sounds like your OVP relay, if it is the original Seimens unit they are known to be from a faulty batch fitted to cars around 1994-5 and is most likely the cause of your problem. Mine failed about 4 years ago but it was itermittent causing the engine to cut out until it was fully warmed up, which could be scary at road junctions first thing in the morning.
http://www.eurocarparts.com/ ;will get you one in a couple of days if you give them the part no.,but they do not hold them in stock; mine cost about £40 +vat so with inflation about £60 total.

If your stranded and cant start the car then unplug the OVP and plug it back in again, this usually gives it a kick and should be enough to get you going again.

"Faulty batch", it has failed after 13 years, not bad for a relay me thinks, relays are only only designed to do a minimum amount of operations, and if it completes these, whether it is in 2 years or 20 years it is on borrowed time and will eventually fail.

thanks everyone,
how do I find out the part number? I haven't had a chance to look at it today, but under torchlight last night there seemed to be quite a few numbers on the front. What format is the part number likely to take and does it correspond to the numbers written on the front?

It has been said on this forum before by T.V. and I can confirm it, theese relays suffer from dry joints on the printed board inside, you can jently prize off the cover and resoler the board carefully, this was 100% sucessfull in my case.
