Malcolm (or of course anybody else),
Maybe you can help me with some information relating to Oxygen sensor in my car.
I have a very intermittant problem which occurs when running on LPG. It only happens under specific circumstances. Occcasionally when going down a long steep hill at high(ish) speed the EML comes on. When I took the car back to the LPG conversion garage (as it happpened shortly after I had it converted) they checked the fault code and said it was "Oxygen sensor Block 1" - and reset the light. I have driven about 18,000 miles since this time and it has happened 3 more times always under the same conditions. My guess is that when the car is going at high speed with no throttle and running on LPG that the sensor is picking up false information, but maybe it is actually faulty as the LPG converters suggest.
What is your opinion and is the sensor expensive and or difficult to change?

As it has only happened so infrequently I guess nothing serious can be afoot so it hasn't bothered me, I am even thinking of getting an OBD2 reader so I can reset the light myself !

Thanks in advance,

Andy

Though I know how they work this is not really my line, and I will be doing an article on them for the DIY.

I can only think that as LPG is so much cleaner than other fuels the Oxegen sensor could be a little confused as to what is happening, its purpose being to monitor the exhaust gas and adjust the fuel air ratio accordingly.

I did read your previous thread on it.

I would suggest that the lambda sensor is experiencing unburnt fuel in the exhaust. On the overrun, down a hill, the standard car will switch off the injectors completely. This is to save fuel. I would think that your LPG system is not doing this, and unburnt LPG is travelling through into the exhaust. This will damage your cat if left unresolved.

ummm Thanks for that insite I think you may be right. i'll return again to the LPG converters with that comment and get them to check the LPG injectors are completely shutting down. But as the problem is so intermittant I expect I'll have problems convincing them
