recently did some spraying on my silver c180 and it looks pants!

It's almost like the guy in the auto paint shop gave me the wrong colour mix.
Trouble is YOU CAN get variations I know from spray technique temps etc, and though I'm no expert but it did look ok before the clear coat.
Its hard to explain I'm aware of the metal flakes and so on, but now its done and cut back, in comparison with adjacent panels it just looks the wrong colour silver. Should be brilliant and in the right light its close, but more often it looks a slight bronzey silver.
Any experts or advice please. Dont want to have to redo it. Quite a lot of work and paint. Are there any shades 'close' to brilliant silver 744 that fit this description?

Best thing to do is post a few pics of the offending colour and then we could give you some advise on how best to fix the problem, silver most people will tell you has to be blended..flashed into the next panel..to loose the colour and get it to match....
Some paint manufacturers have around 7 or 8 different shades of 744 silver,

Did you use aerosol cans or two pack? If it was aerosol then you will be hard pressed to get the desired shade. If it was two pack then you can paint a spray out card first, before painting the car, and check it against the car.If it looks spot on you can away witout blending into the next panel. Sadly now you have painted the car there is little you can do, other than polish the adjacent panel. To be fair, the paint supplier should have checked the variant shades against your car first to provide a more accurate match.

Silver is a real b*tch of a colour to match.

Post up some pics so you can get some more informed ideas/suggestions.

Thanks guys, I did a few sections, bonnet wing and rear quarter panel (coz I had to do the slim bit over the doors)
I was very weary about getting correct colour, and chatted at length with the paint guy swapping all the stories. This was the second litre I'd bought. He even gave me a print out of the mix. Max Meyer formula report. I did a test on a post, cardboard and a bit of scrap metal I had. Really to get the swing of it before the real thing and set the gun up. It was a blindingly hot day, out side and I was weary of it going on dry. Saw it flash in about 30 seconds after each coat. Went on lovely and I was VERY pleased with the colour and finish. Absolutely spot on. Paint was a single pack brilliant silber 744,9744,DB,744.
The clear coat was a ppg 2k 2:1 mix. Again went on a dream. Several coats and left to air dry? (Wondered if should have been baked) Anyway on about a week before touching it but I new the next day it wasnt right. Hoped it would polish up better but hasn't. So wonder if the clear coat has affected the colour?

No the clearcoat wont have affected the colour, even baked clear/lacquer wont make any difference, you have used a solvent based basecoat and in general these need to be blended into the next panel to get a colour match. I'm afraid you're gonna have to repaint and blend...

Clearcoats can affect the shade, believe it or not. Some are more yellow than others and this can affect the shade. If the basecoat looked a spot on match before you lacquered it, it could be the lacquer at fault. Also you say you put on several coats. Modern lacquers only need 1 & 1/2 to 2 coats, so this could also be a contributing factor. There are so many variables to paintwork it really does take years of practice, so I have every sympathy for you.

many thanks, I would agree with the slight yellow tint. Thats just how it seems. Though it looks like the base coats at fault not the clear. Going to give it a realy good cut and polish this weekend and see. Certain angles it still looks ok. Wondered if me or the way factory paint applied. T take a bow to all the painters out there. ****** hard work and difficult to get it right. Squeezing the triggers the easy bit. I would have gladly had someone do it and I know some guys who do magic with paint but wanted 300 just to do bonnet and I couldn't transport the car. Thankfully I've done a little bit before and not afraid of hard work. Just disappointed and hopefully wiser.

my thoughts exactly. it does take years of practise. then when your like me and you havent painted for approx 8yrs and you need to do a job like i do on my car, you find the paint is all different now and you but ready mixed clearcoat/thinners etc which were unheard of when i painted, water based paint etc so im looking like i will be teaching myself all over again!!!:shock:
