Mercedes withdrew the red colour for a while because of the oxidisation problem to the paint . I don't think they fixed the problem .. Im afraid a quick once over with T cut and then turtle wax once a year is all i can suggest....
Dave,
i totally agree there, my other half has a 1997 VW polo..nice little car all round, but its solid red....and after a week in the sun, its solid red with white patches.....
its a nightmare, if used cutting polish, sealants the lot, and nothing seems to stop it, except, as you say, a lot of elbow grease.
The problem with the red is down to how the UV rays from the sun attacts it. The other problem is that the owners keep putting the vehicle through car washes. Thereby washing off all the polish. Never polishing their vehicle, allowing the sun to really bake it. Till its too late!!!!!
Re: my paintwork, I bought the car when 4 years old from a MB dealership and hand washed & polished it using all the right products - after 12 months the paint started to oxidise took it back to the dealership who talked me into having it cut back and coated with a special teflon coating at a cost of £200 +. It was fine for about a month or 2 and then it started again every time it rained so I got my money back but only as credits against services. Not overly happy about it as the main reason I bought a Mercedes was for the build quality and finish
This red business is something to do with the pigment; it also (somehow) makes the paint soft. Who remembers those maroon BMC 1800's? - they always looked as though they had been sprayed with matt paint.

My dads first car was a BMC product. Interestingly every other car he owned after that was a VW, which considering he fought a war against the Germans, it must have said something for BMC!!
