I want to paint my 107 450SL. The car is Champagne Gold. Are there any good books/guides available on how to paint in metallic paints? I have only ever painted cellulose myself and wanted to know how hard it would be to paint the metallic. Also I would note that the car just needs a light overspray and not a bare metal job - the paint is just faded and panels do not quite match (yes I have cut and polished etc)!

Cellulose is being phased out this year, You could paint it in a metallic gold cellulose one coat system and do 2 single or 1 double top coat in clear mixed with the minimum of 20% gold, you cant use clear on its own for it will craze in the first frost, this will give you the glass like finish with the colour underneath

As you should know the point where you have orange peel and a run is very small, It is always better to do double coats, that is to go all over the car once, by the time you get around to the start point again the first coat will have gone off and act like a glue and will hold the second coat, it must be a wet coat, then the paint will flow.
Yes you could use a base coat system but the fumes are poison and difficult to dry, the same with 2 pack clear, with out an oven,it will take so long to dry it will be full of bits by the time it went off.

Warm the paint up to 20c this means less thiners and a better finish with less chance of runs

You can always ring me if you wish

I should have added that the compressor is important you do need a working pressure of 40lbs with a 12" min fan on the gun.

With metallic, if the pressure changes so will the colour, the same with the angle of the gun, it is best to do all of the awkward corners and door shuts first, otherwise the paint can sag
