I have bought a second hand 200TE reg 1992, body color Barolo red.
I had the windshield replaced and a sticky tape was placed on the top of the windshield which I was asked to leave for at least 24 hrs ( until the seal compound was fully cured, I presume..).
Next day when I pulled the tape, it had peeled patches of what looked like a clear lacquer coating of the paintwoark leaving under a dull color!
(cursing and flowery language left out here!! )
see attached photo.
So my question is:
Is there normally a clear lacquer layer?
How can I repair it? Can it be removed before a re-waxing?
Was that a DIY job?

Thanks

Paddy

Who replaced the windshield? Was it a professional company or a friend? Its fixable, but to achieve the same quality as it had previously, you'd have to remove the screen.....

Paddy my old 88 230e has lacquer/clear coat that has been flaking off with a number of years leaving the red paint below dull. You can buy clear coat in an aerosol can if you want to give it a go depending obviously how good or bad the rest of the car is.

Assuming it was a professional co - their insurance should pay for it to be fixed. I can't see how you can just blow it in - the paint levels will be different so just spraying over the top will just make it look a whole lot worse.

If someone had put tape on my paintwork that did that, they would need a bodyguard !

Seriously, go back to the windscreen place and point out what they have done to your car and ask for some form of restitution.

If you get no joy, don't argue with them, get a quote to spray the roof of the vehicle, contact a solicitor and get a letter drafted explaining how they will find themselves in small claims court if they don't pay up.

Small claims is really easy to do, costs almost nothing and most companies will cave in when a demand is delivered by a bailiff, which only costs a few quid extra.

Good Luck,

Richard
