I read a FAQ about the paintwork on a MB would be repaired by them if the vehicle is less than 8 years old. My 51 plate w203 is showing signs of "orange peeling" with a little rust coming through. Does this attract a repair from MB, if so how does one go about making a claim and do you have to had owned the car from new??:!::!::!:

Don't matter if you have owned it since new, you have to take it to your MB dealers and they will take photos and submit the claim for you!!

Hi , I can confirm that it does work !

I have a S320 LWB that was within 2 weeks  of 8 years old when I had it serviced at MB Peterborough who spotted rust in the 'normal' places for an s class.

Checked the MB service history, cleaned it, took pictures, submitted the warranty claim, got approval within 3 days, it was in on the 4th day and they were working on it.

Came out (3 weeks later) looking like new, 2 new wings, boot etc. brilliant.

I didn't pay a penny of the gulp £7K bill !!

I had owned the car for about 11 months.

Apparently the key is the basic condition of the vehicle, service history (always MB) and how long you have owned the car (as some non franchised dealers try to get paintwork done like this !), I think < 6 months might be a problem and who is the registered owner (as they took a copy of the v5).

Other than that simply brilliant.

The only (very minor) complaint is they gave me a smart for four, but they did warn me !!!!

depends on what you mean by 'orange peel'. If its bubbling from the rust you should be ok but if it looks like poor paintwork rippled then I suspect some previous muppet owner had a tidy up job done.
If so, you're out of luck. MB check the paintwork depth (they have a meter that can tell) and if the panel has been painted after it left the factory they won't entertain a claim. Worth bobbing down to the dealer sooner rather than later as if they are going to turn you down, you're better off knowing now so you can get it sorted. If they're happy but need you to wait several months, they will tell you.

Its rust bubbling up through the paint, on both front wheel arches rear nearside arch and the bonnet :-? And quite frankly it should make no dammed difference how long you have owned the car IMHO, the paintwork is still crap

I will be submitting a claim in the new year, i have got the phone no of the person in Inverness who deals with paintwork warranty claims. The car has a full MB service history and this should really have been sorted before now.

I wonder how long MB will carry on using wheel arch liners that do not seal or stop the wet mud from building up in the inside of the arch. I know that MB more than many other makers use the space for components that need access. Any metal no matter how well it is painted must rust if it has a thick coating of wet salty mud for months on end.

I keep mine clean, and as there is no mud inside the arches, and they dry in and hour

Unfortunately i have only just got the car so have not had the chance to clean anything out. We will see how i get on in the new year, the bonnet and the roof are suffering the same problem (like spiders webs under the paint)

Thats known as crazing, incorrect application of base coats, or contaminated surface before applying the paint

I had mine done by MB P'Boro earlier this year.
Wasn't without incident, but they did cover the work.

How did you find the 'Arfer Daily' style body shop guy? Dodgy as sin I thought, but nice enough when you get to know him.

Goes to show how variable dealers can be !

I thought the guy was great (assuming it was the same guy!) seemed to be working very hard across multiple dealerships (as the bodywork is outsourced), my s320 is LPG converted and he liked it so much he asked to let him know before I sold it

Overall I was very impressed (as you could imagine!), and have been back since for other true MB work, which has always been good for me, although I am dreading going in to try and get my A/C fan problem (see my other posts) sorted out...

Yep, pretty sure it was the same guy as he also asked me to let him know when I wanted to sell mine.
Glad you got your car sorted ok. Like I say, I did too, but took a bit of pushing.

Regards your A/C fan problem: have you tried taking it to an indy? I'm assuming you travel from Rutland (Oakam??) to P'Boro for servicing/maintenance on your W220? If so, I can recomend a garage that would proabably be similar distance for you to travel. (And FAR MORE competent.)

I read a FAQ about the paintwork on a MB would be repaired by them if the vehicle is less than 8 years old.

I have some issues with my E320CDI and took it to my local MB dealer and they mentioned this 8year limit, but I can't find it mentioned anywhere within my service book. All it mentions is that it's 30years and must have been serviced by MB within the last 2 years.

Who is correct :?:

Well my car has full MB history is 7 years and 2 months old and the front wheel arches are bubbling out as well as crazing on the wings/roof and doors and one of the rear arches is dodgy , IMHO MB should have done something about this a long time ago, before i got the car.

Is not this thing where the rules have changed recently, I am sure that Hawk20 put up a post on this change

But if a vehicle is purchased with X warranty then they can't part way through say that the vehicle's warranty is now Y.

Can they do that :?:

As that would would go against the sale of goods act :?: as you could argue that the vehicle was purchased on the basis of the warranty that was supplied with the vehicle and not what they now want to cover

It's the same as if you purchased a TV with a 5yr warranty and then at year 4 you have a problem and they then say that it now a 3yr warranty and your not covered. :x
