With modern cars the problem appears to be more pronounced as manufacturers switch to water based paints. They seem to suffer this "dimpling" effect as part of the drying process.

It used to be too much paint, you could flat it down, however that is very labour intensive which is why they don't really do it now. With the nanoparticle paint Mercedes use I cannot say I've noticed particularly bad orange peel on the new cars.

I thought it was due to too low a temp in the spray booth ?
I would'nt expect any Merc to suffer from orange peel, used to be the preserve of Ford and my Rangy!

its generally caused by paint that is too thick...but in the case of manufacturers, its a fine line between enought paint and the shortest amount of time to paint a car..actually orange peel on a new car is quite attractive ...

various
I know of people who have rejected new cars because the paint was so bad. Seems to be colour dependent too. They were told it was because these new eco-paints are not as good as before.
