i acquired a used panoramic top for 1991 sl500 last week. it fits perfectly with no leaks. however the hood button flashes and a warning buzzer keep sounding when the car is in motion. i understand that the system is informing me that it believes that the top is not secure however i know that it is securely fastened. i have also tried this top on the friends 1997 sl500 and the same problem occurs. any advise/ guidence would be greatfully welcome. many thanks

You must look at the 4 pins, if one is bent then the hydrollic lock cannot function, Leave the roof just resting, and look at the pins, are they in the middle of the hole

the fitting of this roof should be done by MB there are 10 adjustments to be made before you can use this roof.

Malcolm

Its a R129 not W129

Being logical about this.

I presume that you have a standard hardtop as well and I further presume that this doesnt cause any problems?

Also presuming that your mate also has a hardtop and his works properly also this can only mean that the panoramic hardtop that you acquired must be the problem. - does this seem logical to you?

Have you tried resting it on and then locking it down manually?

If I havent put on my hardtop for some time I sometimes get the flashing light and warning tone when I think it is locked down fully. Inevitably its a front pin not seated fully and I find a quick manual lock down sorts the problem.

Sorry to butt in,I have just spent 10 mins reading the adjustments for this roof, its a weight issue. Far too much for me to put up here, It has to be set up all over and shims fitted, if you do not do it the £1500 controller can go.

Sounds like a possibilty Malcolm, the panoramic roof must be susbtantially heavier than the standard hardtop I would think. If you follow my earlier logic it must be the roof itself that is the problem. I suppose the original vehicle it was supplied with would have been adjusted accordingly at the factory.

Raj,

The manual lock down is easy enough and is detailed in the owners handbook. You do need the special tool that is normally located in the boot tool kit.

ooh!, the thought of taking it to MB for adjustment ! Do you own a gold mine by any chance !?

Do you have a standard hardtop and does it lock down okay?

One of these days I will activate my web site (never done it yet) and put this type of info up.
I will photograph the instructions tomorrow and try and put them up here.the problem is that I run WIS on a separate computer, its so tempermental the first time I tried to load it I lost the hard drive,it is not a Windows program, though it runs on XP it is more suited to windows 2000 or NT and as you know, they can crash anytime, there is also no print out on WIS
Us all having the same car and roof is of interest and I will do what I can.

Malcolm

PS if succesful I will you running round your car with feeler gauges this weekend

I have 18 photos, too many to put here and too many to Email. I can zip them , WAR RAR. Other than that all I can do is to get a web site up and running.

Hi all, I acquired a panoramic for my sl at the weekend. (Amazingly with the right colour and interior). Orinal was stolen from previouls owner. However I'm have a similar but bigger problem. The passenger side windscreeen lug will not lock. When the button is pressed the roof is pulled down but doesn't lock at this point then simply rises again. It's draughty and of course the alarm sounds.

First can I lock this down manually as suggested above ?
If it is locked down manually does have to be unlocked manually?

If Malcolm finds a way to make the photo's available on this I would love to see them as my car is not going near a MB dealer again. I'm happy to take zipped versions.

Thanks
Simon

I would not force it down manually you can break the locking the lugs.

No, it will release via the automatic system as normal. Its the passenger side that plays up on my sometimes and does the same thing - appears to seat the hood fully and then eases up once I release the button. A quick turn with the allen key locks it down. I dont have to lean on the allen key to lock it - just reasonable force.
