Sorry they all are, quite a bang, some folk never use it, or they keep their foot on it to let it up slowly

Is it banging when releasing, if it is then i belive there is a rubber stop which fits on the pedal assembley which acts as a bumper for the pedal when released, this could of come off. do you get a metalic clonk when releasing?

Well no it doesn't sound like metal, my girlfriend has a C180 and hers just feels more worn in and less stiff, maybe mine hasn't been used much but is it not necessary to use it?

Can't remember the last time I used mine, but it does work, when it was in for the last service they put it on, and I tried to drive off not realising, very effective. Made a hell of a clunk when I released it, but it was facing down hill.

They all do clunk to some degree, but I would use it. Better safe than sorry.

Wow! never really occured to me that you wouldn't use it, drove a 190E for 7 years, of course it had a conventional hand brake, but!

I did exactly the same! It really threw me for a moment.

Not using the parking brake when you should is not really legal, see and read the highway code and all the stuff you need to pass a test these days.

They do tend to clonk or bang or clunk when released, using the brake keeps its cables and linkage loose and reduces the amount of clonk/bang/clunk, holding the brake pedal down as the PB is released also reduces the noises.

I am one of those who says always but maybe its 95% or so, often the lights change just as I apply the PB.

I loath sitting at junctions with a pair of bright lamps telling me that the bloke in front does not bother with the "correct" procedure to help ensure road safety.

I respect your right to apply the handbrake, at the same time I loath it at traffic lights when people take and age to release the handbrake, select gear, and move off taking often 5-10 seconds of what are sometimes only 30 seconds of light change. But whatever works for each is just fine. Anyway back to the point.

I agree here and do not forget they were looking the other way when the lights changed

Plus the fact that it is not good to keep putting the car in and out of drive when sitting at the lights for a minute or so at a time.

Parking brakes are essential on a manual admittedly but superfluous on an auto. Factor in SBC equipped cars with hold function and you really don't need it at all. I use mine maybe once every couple of months and more to exercise it than anything else.

I thought that was the correct procedure for an automatic gearbox?
I only use the footbrake when parking up for the night on the driveway.
