My parking brake pedal was very stiff so I decided to have a look. I could see that it appeared to be held on by a circlip. I've spent ages removing the circlip and just as long getting the pedal off and cleaned up. The circlip was almost impossible to remove as there isn't a lot of room due to the steering colum and the heater pipes. It works quite well now but the cable is a little sticky.
I decided to to have a look in the haynes manual to see what was involved in replacing the front part of the cable.
It was then I found that haynes had a chapter on the parking brake removal. The whole parking brake assembly is held on by two bolts and I could have had it out in minutes...doh!
I didn't even think to look in Haynes as I didn't think it would be covered.
