I took off my rear discs (W124) to look at how to adjust the brake shoes and the pads looked abotu 1-2mm thick and just flaked off...

So on gsfcarparts... how many brake shoe sets do I need to do both rear wheels? 1 or 2??

Is it an easy job?

Thanks.

it's quite an easy job, but there are few little tricks to make it easier.

The hard bit is usually getting the disk off because the shoes jam it.

I did mine ages ago and can't remember if four shoes came in one box or not, might be worth a phone call.

Sure I'll order a set and see how it goes. I would assume you should do both sides at the same time so the box should contain 4.

Will report back here for futher instructions soon, thanks.

Just back the ratchet off and the disc/drum slides off

Since you must do the same to both sides shoes are supplied in sets of 4. get a new set of springs i.e. a shoe fitting kit since the old ones will be tired, especialy the silly little ones that hold the shoes against the backplate. Use a 10/12mm wide screwdriver blade into the end of these to disengage and on assembly re-engage the stupid things through the 12mm hole in the shoes frame, they can be very vexing and fiddly, just push them in and turn untill the hook will come out of the backplate.

Use new bolts to re attach the brake caliper or clean the old ones threads and use loctite on re assembly..

You can modify an old bolt to act as a tool to put the springs on.

Another good trick is putting a bit of string through the double spring to hook it on.

Somebody told me about these tricks a couple of years ago, all credit goes him.
